Position Available as Interim Manager at The Canadian Canoe Museum

Interim Manager - One Year Contract Position

The Canadian Canoe Museum invites interested and qualified candidates to apply for the position of Interim Manager. The starting date is early April, 2004. The Interim Manager reports to the Board of Directors.

The Canadian Canoe Museum, a museum of national and international significance, is a not for profit organization whose mission is to preserve and share the culture and history of the canoe. It holds the world's largest collection of canoes and kayaks 600 water craft of which 120 are currently exhibited. The Museum temporarily closed in the fall of 2003 due to a lack of operating funds.A new business plan has been developed and a new governance structure approved with a planned re-opening date of May 1, 2004.

The Musem's immediate objectives are:

  • Re-open the Museum on May 1, 2004.
  • Conduct a membership drive and fundraising campaign.
  • Develop a three to five year business plan.

Requirements of the Position

Education

  • Graduation from a recognized post secondary institution in an area related to the position or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
  • French would be an advantage but is not a requirement.

Experience

  • Significant experience in the management of financial and human resources. This experience would include budget control and preaparation as well as the use of electronically based financial systems management.
  • Significant experience in negotiating, building and sustaining relationships with partners including working with communities, business partners, governments, volunteers, third parties etc. for the successful development and implementation of communication and education programs.
  • Personal suitability demonstrated by: Effective and strong interpersonal relationships (i.e. tactful, persuasive, sensitive, cooperative, adaptable, dependable); Leadership (i.e. initiative, innovative, creative, enthusiastic, motivated); Professional Skills (i.e. discretion, judgment, reliability, thoroughness); Work with a minimum of direct supervision.
  • Recent or significant experience in the planning, managing, delivery of an operational program in an organization with public information/ education as a major component of the program.
  • Experience in the not-for profit sector, preferably related to cultural and/or heritage organizations.

Specific Tasks

  • To implement the approved 2004 Business Plan.
  • To assist the Board in fundraising, marketing and grant applications.
  • To manage a small staff.
  • To be flexible and able to multi-task.
  • To report to the Board and its committees on a regular basis.
  • To work closely with the Museum's Restructuring Professionals as required.

Note that the filling of this position is contingent on the success of the Museum's current fundraising initiative.
